To take care of handmade knives, especially those made from high-carbon steel which is prone to rust, follow these steps:

  • Clean Regularly: Use a soft cloth with mild soap and warm water to clean the blade after use. Wipe the blade dry immediately if you’re cutting wet foods to prevent staining or rust.
  • Avoid Dishwasher and Sun: Never put your knife in the dishwasher, and keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration of the handle.
  • Store Correctly: Store your knife on a magnetic knife rack or in a block, not in a drawer with other utensils, to avoid scratches and damage.
  • Sharpen Regularly: Keep your knife sharp to prevent accidents and ease of maintenance. Sharpening can be done with tools and methods suitable for the type of steel in your knife.
  • Use Appropriate Materials: When using a cutting board, choose one made of plastic or wood to avoid damaging your knife. High-carbon steel knives should not be cut on marble boards.
  • Apply Wax: Protect carbon steel and stainless steel knives with a light coating of hand-buffed wax, such as Renaissance Wax, to prevent rust and maintain the blade’s edge.
  • Handle and Sheath Maintenance: Clean handles and sheaths with a damp cloth and buff with a soft dry cloth. Do not use oil on sheaths or knives, as it can attract dust and abrasive particles that may scratch the blade.
  • Long-Term Storage: For very long-term storage, keep the knife with the sheath, not inside it, to prevent chemical reactions that could corrode the steel. Store with photographic quality desiccant in a plastic bag if needed.

Remember to treat your knife with respect and care, as it is a valuable tool and an investment. Regular attention to these points will help ensure your knife remains in top condition for years to come.
